Assignment: Ukiah- On the Mountain House Road again

Both out-and-back hikes on their own are in the range of 7.7 to 7.8 miles. I was not eager to make the hike back to the parking area anytime soon because I knew it was going to be a long, rocky descent. A lot of this blue-blazed trail is fairly narrow, but at least you can enjoy some relatively flat sections near the top, as well as a fun rock scramble. The hike up this trail starts out pretty mellow, but then you need to dig deep to follow the blue blazes and make it to the summit of Little House Mountain. As you re-approach the saddle, you’ll see a trail sign for the blue-blazed Little House Mountain Trail.

Several Notes About Hiking House Mountain

The saddle between Big House and Little House Mountains was originally a homestead, and more recently a orchard and pasture. With camping space for multiple tents, as well as a seasonal spring just past the shelter on Big House Mountain, this is a perfect place to take an overnight backpack. Big House Mountain, with great views to the west from Goat Point Overlook, and Little House Mountain, with its spectacular views of the Shenandoah Valley to the northeast. Goat Point was named for a local goat that would look for handouts from hikers around 2011. Unfortunately the goat has not been seen in several years, but the climb to the overlook on Big House Mountain is definitely worth the effort. Turn left for the overlook, which you’ll reach at the 3.3-mile mark. All along the trail are small viewing ares, and some even have rocks you can easily climb to get a better panoramic view. Of course, use caution anytime you boulder, and stick to the rocks that are back off of the ledge.

Every chef dreams of cooking in a kitchen similar to the one in this home. Getting the building permit from local authorities was the most difficult step. It will only get easier now, but you need to make an important decision. Before you hire a construction team and gather the materials, take your time to choose a layout suitable for your needs. During its 19th-century heyday, the hotel  embodied the peak of luxury for a generation of the rich and famous. Whether you’re summiting a mountain, preparing for a storm, or just trying to survive a hectic schedule, Mountain House promises to keep you fed in 10 minutes or less.

It was more than just a hike; it was a journey that connected me deeply to nature’s splendor. The well-trodden paths, flanked by nature’s bounty, offer much more than just a scenic escape. In this blog post, I share my personal exploration of House Mountain, including the highs, the lows, the unexpected surprises, and the profound moments of awe. So, join me as I relive the trek that left an indelible mark on my Tennessee hiking adventures.

Two bedrooms are equal in size and they measure 10’2″x11’6″ each. The House Mountain State Natural Area— designated in 1987— consists of 527 acres (2.13 km2), mostly on the south side of the mountain. House Mountain is known for its huge sandstone boulders, its wide variety of bird and plant life, and for the views from its two peaks. From the saddle, there are two steeper and more strenuous trails ascending to the peaks.

House Mountain Trails: Which One to Choose?

There is only one walk-in closet, but the en-suite bathroom has two sinks and a custom-made shower. This mountain retreat with a wrap-around deck and a vaulted central core is the perfect choice for a secluded spot in nature. It has everything you need, so it can also be used as a vacation home. The central space of this home is huge and it has a cathedral ceiling. Here you will find a 17’9″x15’8″ dining area and a 19’9″x18’3″ great room with a fireplace and built-in shelves.

Before you make a final choice on a house plan, there are several factors to consider that might influence your decision. Take a look at the 3 most important ones and remember them when you are discussing the details with your project manager. Over the years, it transformed into a public house, then into a restaurant and bar, always radiating a welcoming ambiance and hospitality. Just add water and savor in less than 10 minutes with no cleanup. During this period of social distancing, we encourage you to get outside and exercise responsibly. Please don't overcrowd trails and practice Leave No Trace principles, including packing-out trash.

Many people hike up the West Overlook Trail, then take the Crest Trail over to the Mountain Trail and come back down, skipping the somewhat overgrown East Overlook. That makes about a 3 mile loop (including the connecting trail from the parking area) which is easily done in about 2 hours or less. It is fairly easy to get to the trailhead from anywhere in Knoxville as it is located not far off of Rutledge Pike. It takes about 30 minutes to get there from West Town Mall and just 20 minutes from downtown.

House Mountain is easily visible from State Route 89A as you drive from Sedona and Cottonwood. Turkey Creek Trail climbs for 3 miles up to the northern rim of the caldera. From there you can follow an old Jeep trail road down into the bowl of the caldera and up to the southern rim. Then, it is a steep, but short trek off trail to the summit. It was named House Mountain because of the rocky summit formation that superficially looks like a house from the Verde Valley below.

House Mountain also is a favorite place for birdwatchers as migrating hawks and warblers can be observed from the mountain. In addition, ruffed grouse, pileated woodpeckers, scarlet tanagers, wild turkeys, and more than one hundred additional species of birds have been observed on the mountain. As I navigated through the Crest Trail, I was mesmerized by the scenery.

The new Little House Mountain trail is now fully marked with standard vertical blue blazes from the saddle (just behind the two signs) all the way to the incredible overlook. This new trail was the solution to the very strenuous, straight up trail before. If you start at the parking area and hike both Big House and Little House mountains the total distance is 8.9 miles. In comparing my hike to AllTrails, I can tell you that AllTrails does not include the 0.9 miles to and from the rocky overlook at Big House Mountain. In fact, it’s nearly four miles from the rocky outcrop on Little House Mountain to the parking area. Take in all the views of mountains and working farms down below.
